Badger Surveys

Badgers and their setts are afforded protection under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. This widespread and abundant species is protected to prevent persecution rather than for conservation reasons.

The presence of badgers is unlikely to preclude development at most sites but where impacts to badgers or their setts is anticipated mitigation will need to be put in place. This may take a variety of forms but where necessary a licence can generally be obtained from Natural England to permit a sett to be closed. For significant setts, a replacement sett may need to be provided.

CSa have considerable expertise with badger survey and mitigation work. Our ecologists undertake large scale badger survey work at the landscape level, as well as detailed site-specific studies. We have worked on numerous badger mitigation projects and can offer the following services;

  • Detailed badger surveys and badger bait marking studies
  • Design of Mitigation Strategies
  • Licence applications
  • Sett disturbance/closure work
  • Artificial sett construction
