Bat Surveys

Bat related survey work and advice forms a significant component of our workload and is an area of particular expertise. The CSa bat ecology team currently includes five Natural England licensed bat workers.

The team as a whole is highly familiar with bat survey techniques, bat mitigation and licensing.

All British bat species are afforded protection under UK and European legislation. It is an offence to kill, capture or disturb them, or to damage, destroy or obstruct access to roosts. Should a bat roost be affected by development proposals a European Protected Species (EPS) licence will be required before the development can proceed.

Bat surveys are subject to seasonal constraints and the EPS licensing process can be complex. It is recommended that potential bat issues be investigated at an early stage to minimise delays to projects. CSa's expertise in this area can be vital to helping developments move smoothly through the planning and construction phases.

Bat related services include:

  • Building bat inspections and assessments
  • Tree assessments (visual ground based / tree climbing)
  • Bat activity surveys (remote survey work / transects)
  • Recording and analysis of bat calls
  • Design of bat mitigation (including bat buildings and other structures)
  • EPS licence applications
  • Watching briefs and monitoring surveys
