Bird Surveys
Where development land is considered to hold potential to support important bird populations (either at the local or more widespread scale) breeding and / or winter bird surveys may be required to assess the value of the site to birds, particularly rare, declining or protected species.
All species are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take any species of wild bird, and to take, damage or destroy their nests or eggs. Some bird species are also afforded protection under the section 41 of the NERC Act and Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Where disturbance could occur, a licence may be required to survey Schedule 1 listed species, such as barn owls and black redstarts.
Where the value of a site for birds will be affected by development, CSa can produce mitigation packages, informed by relevant bird survey data. Where nesting habitat will be lost, guidance can be provided on the appropriate time of year to complete this work, and where appropriate our experienced ecologists can undertake thorough habitat checks to ensure that impacts to nesting birds do not occur. Advice can also be provided on providing new opportunities and enhancements for birds within new developments.
