CSa Input: Bat surveys and mitigation
Client: Westbuild Homes Ltd
Date: 2007
A suite of bat surveys were undertaken to provide a full picture of bat activity at this site, bats having previously been identified in the large house that was earmarked for demolition. Survey results confirmed that a low number of brown long-eared bats were using the roof space of the main house and there was some evidence of other species elsewhere. A detailed mitigation strategy was drawn up and agreed. A variety of alternative roosting opportunities were created including a dedicated loft space within a specially designed double garage, crevices and voids under hanging tiles and a selection of bat boxes erected on adjacent trees. A programme of monitoring to assess the up-take of new roosts by bats is now underway.
