CSa Input: Protected species surveys, reptile mitigation strategy and landscape design

Date: 2008

Client: Manor Kingdom Southern Ltd

A small scale housing development was planned including an area of riverside parkland to be given over to the Parish Council. Initial surveys revealed the presence of common lizards. Mitigation involved utilising the adjacent land to provide a receptor area for translocated animals, further to a strategy agreed with the Council Ecologist. A temporary holding pen including two artificial hibernacula was created within this riverside park and over the summer months animals were collected and placed inside. Once the riverside park was established, reptiles were allowed to colonise the wider areas. The park is now managed by the Parish Council for local amenity and as a wildlife area, in line with a management plan prepared by CSa.
