CSa Input: Design and implementation of  ecological mitigation, relating to great crested newts and other species

Date: 2002 - 2008

Client: Medway Council

A range of ecological issues had been identified before CSa became involved, but our expertise was needed to resolve constraints and keep the construction programme on track. The project nvolved an 18 million pound realignment and widening of a major trunk road, with the associated movement of gas and water pipelines to accommodate the development.

Foremost among the issues was the presence of great crested newts. CSa was able to rapidly devise a mitigation strategy, obtain a DEFRA licence and facilitate the start of works. CSa planned and supervised the installation of permanent newt fencing and new wildlife ponds. Mitigation was also implemented for badgers, water voles and reptiles. Monitoring work continued until 2008 in line with the great crested newt licence and the results have shown that great crested newts are starting to successfully use the new mitigation ponds.
