Badger Surveys and Bovine TB Vaccine Research

Badger Surveys and Bovine TB Vaccine Research

CSa Input: Baseline badger surveys to inform Badger Vaccine Deployment Project.

Date: 2010

Client: The Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA)

CSa undertook baseline badger surveys in spring 2010 as part of the first stage of the The Badger Vaccine Deployment Project, part of the Bovine TB Vaccines Programme funded by Defra to develop TB vaccines for badgers and cattle.

Vaccination of either cattle and/or wildlife has been identified as an important long-term policy option for reducing the risk of bovine TB in Great Britain. The Badger Vaccine Deployment project will see an injectable BCG badger vaccine, developed as part of the programme, be deployed to badgers in the trial areas to develop practical know-how for vaccinating badgers and inform plans for future use of both injectable and oral badger TB vaccines

CSa undertook baseline badger surveys in the proposed Staffordshire catchment. Participating farms were systematically surveyed for badger signs and setts, with detailed survey data and maps subsequently provided to FERA for their use.
